Polish names of artificial flies part II.

Author: Robert Kostecki

In 1974-1977, Vladimir Arpashev published three series of articles in „Wiadomosci Wędkarskie”: „Artificial flies”; „How to make an artificial fly” and „Fly lines”. After Feliks Choynowski, Jozef Wyganowski and Stanislaw Koziej - Wlodzimierz Arpashev was another person who, after the Second World War, took up the topic of fly-fishing in a slightly broader way in the pages of publicly available publications.

In one of the articles belonging to the first series, Vladimir Arpashev analyzed the basis for the introduction of artificial fly nomenclature and its unification in the Polish language. All the material, including 52 proposals for Polish names, was put into tabular form and expanded with data on the description of flies and the effectiveness of their use in relation to the season and species of fish.

I think that the material recalled and presented so far is not only a „great story of what the willows are humming about, or how a tangled negro chased a waterbuck,” but also an up-to-date database for use by that group of anglers who approach aspects of fly fishing in a more archaic way.
