Black Zulu

Somehow it so happens that important places in my wet box are occupied by flies with a similar pedigree. They originated in the British Isles around the 17th century as lake flies. Later they spread as more universal lures, used all over the world, effective for catching many species of fish in standing, flowing waters, including in the sea. The case is no different with the Black Zulu midge. It is - next to the recently described Soldier Palmer - my favorite wet universal fly. I use it to catch trout, grayling, but probably first of all chub - on chub Black Zulu is a real "killer". It works perfectly after dusk, thanks to its distinctive silhouette and coloration well visible to fish against the silver surface of the water. When completing a set of summer wet flies, do not forget about a few at least Black Zulu in sizes 12-6.

To the hook I will tie a grasp of red yarn. A silver braided lamé will serve as a wrapper.

I wind the shaggy torso from a black dubbing (traditionally made from seal hair), and tie a black soft feather to the torso's scuttle.

I wind five coils of blackberry in the direction of the arrowhead, counter-rotating coils of lamette strengthen the structure.

Now 2-3 coils of the front blackberry, shellac for the head. Black Zulu ready.

Materials needed to make a bow tie:

black dubbing,

red yarn,

silver lamé,

A black hen's neck feather,

wet fly hook.

  1. Mops are ordinary "cloth" in the form of a mop that you meet in stores like Pepco, Bricomarche or slippers from Aliexpress, at least....

  2. Is there a chance for links to materials? Greetings Matthew

  3. Adam, my opinion is this. Since someone, once created(a set of materials, arrangement of wings, etc) gave a name to something( in this case a bow tie....
