Mallard & Pink K.Ch.
Wet flies of the „Mallard” series take their name from the material used in the construction of the wings. These are the shoulder feathers of the mallard duck, brown, black striped ( English. bronze mallard). The second part of the name specifies the color of the trunk and, most often, the blackberry. The most well-known patterns are Mallard & Red, M.& Claret, M.& Black. They are also known with a torso in Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Gold, Silver, Red & Yellow, Mix( yellow/orange/red). The flies in this series are traditional lake lures that have been used in the British Isles for years. But they also work well in rivers when fishing for trout, as well as sea trout. Having once created the „Pink Series”, a set of dry flies, wet flies, nymphs and streamers with pink colored bodies, I supplemented the „Mallard &...” series with a model I called Mallard & Pink K.Ch. Since I had never come across this pattern in any study, I took the liberty of putting my initials in the name. The fly worked well for trout fishing in several Polish and Scandinavian rivers, as well as on the iconic Piaseczno River. Here is Mallard & Pink in a few steps:
Hook (#10- 4). I make the tail from several rays of tippets (this is a must-have material for the whole series). With white leading thread I tie silver oval and flat lamé.
I cover the hook's shank with silver flat lamé and only on such a backing do I wind the trunk with light pink dubbing twisted with white thread. Using this trick ensures that the trunk does not darken excessively when wet.
I rewind the finished torso with several rolls of oval lamette.
I change the thread to black, make a blackberry from a soft ash feather.
I arrange the wings from double strands bronze mallard. I seal the head with shellac.
